Come on in and let me share a couple poems about being grandparents and gettin’ out to watch those grandkids! It is sports time around here and there has been a lot of kid’s games, a lot of bleacher sittin’: under the sun, in the cold, however it comes.
Family Got Speed
College track star Raced and run, For life—record holder, Always a plaque at Alma mater. Took degree to coach, See kids and grandkids: Compete, Prepare for meet; Land the jump! FLY! Coached to try For personal best; Forget the rest— You’ve GOT THIS! Races run, Relays won, Give stance on Award podium—proud; Take your place, Smile, Shine! Ready legs for long jump: HIT that board and LEAP! Mark in feet and Won, mere inches! AAU Junior Olympics— Here. We. Come! Well DONE! Future— College track star, Good to see, Fast like he! Baseball: A Grandpa’s Dream
American pastime, A grandpa’s dream— See a team With grandson’s name On a jersey. Batter ups, Catcher’s squats, Get'em outs, Shouts From dugouts, And cheers from the stands. A hand in Cracker Jacks, Voice found song, “Take me out to the Ball game…” Keep your eye On the ball! coaching. And, stand ups To, ball-cap-off watch A big HIT; Hopes for Bases loaded homer. All joy— In taking that grand slam jog, Gathered crowd at home plate. Scoreboard says, “They’ve WON!” A grandpa’s beam— Seeing that dream— Played on the field— Of America’s pastime. W. Gray -2025
